How To Measure Monocular PD?

You will be surprised to know that there are many ways to determine the best fitting glasses for correcting your eyesight. One of the most crucial parameters in this regard is the pupillary distance and this is measured from your right eye to the left eye.

This distance will help the opticians to determine the center of the glasses which will give you the best vision. When it comes to Monocular PD, you will have to take the measurement from the center of the nose to the center of your eyes.

This will usually be half of the binocular PD. In simple words, these optical centers will be very crucial in the overall performance of your prescription glasses. If it is not done in the proper manner, it can lead to lots of damage in future.

While some people experience mild discomfort and have headaches due to strain in the eyes, some others will face severe reactions and have blurred vision. This can damage your eyes if it is not corrected in the initial stages.

Do it yourself method to measure pupillary distance

It is very easy to measure the pupillary distance and all you need is a basic scale that measures in millimeters and someone to help you in the process.

  • Remember that this is the distance between the center of your pupils when you are looking straight at an object
  • Have some object in front of you and look at it straight without moving your pupils
  • Ask someone to hold the scale on the bridge of your nose and measure the PD
  • Take the exact measurement from the center of the left eye to the center of the right eye
  • This should give you the exact pupillary distance in millimeters
  • It is a good option to repeat the process when you are looking at different objects
  • You can take the average of the measurements to get the optimum PD for your eyes

Yet another simple approach is to use the mirror to measure the PD of your eyes. All you need to do is to stick a scale measuring in millimeters to the mirror and look at it straight.

Make sure that you stick the scale to the exact level of your eyes so that you need not have to bend anywhere or tilt your head to look at the scale. While doing so, make sure to get the center of one of your eyes to the beginning of the scale.

Without moving your pupils, try to get the number on the other side of the scale where the pupil meets the scale. In this manner, you should be able to get the PD of the eyes on your own without taking the help of anyone.

However, this is not a good choice and you may not get accurate results.

Apart from that, you can also take a picture of yourself holding the scale of the bridge of your nose to measure the PD. In most cases, this should give you results with better accuracy and all you need to do is to position the scale of the bridge of your nose while taking the photograph. You can also ask someone else to take the photograph and this will improve the accuracy of the results.

Getting accurate Monocular PD

One of the best methods to get accurate measurements for monocular PD is to take individual measurements for each of your eyes. To begin with, you will have to understand that the regular PD measured will give you binocular PD and this is usually used while prescribing glasses for correcting the eyesight.

On the other hand, monocular PD is the distance from the center of the nose bridge to the center of the pupil. When you consider that most faces are not symmetrical, you will observe that the monocular PD need not be the same for both the eyes.

It may differ slightly due to the symmetry of the face and the arrangement of the bridge of the nose.

In this regard, you cannot get it done yourself and you will have to take the help of a trained optician to measure the monocular PD. They will have the required equipment to measure the PD in an accurate manner and you will get good results in quick time.

All you need to do in this regard is to consult your optician and get the monocular PD measured for your eyes. These measurements will also be mentioned in your prescription glasses for further reference.
